Houghton, NY -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team was back in action away from home on Saturday, as they took on Houghton in non-conference action. The Panthers fell behind early, and despite cutting the lead in half with 20 minutes to go, ultimately fell 4-1.
The Panthers started on the front foot, taking two early shots and winning a corner within the first 5 minutes of play. They went on to rue the missed chances, as the Highlanders were able to bend a shot into the top corner in the 9th minute. The goal turned the momentum to the home team, as Christopher House was forced into two saves within the next five minutes. The Panthers put their first shot on goal in the 17th minute when Zander Parsons headed a free kick on target, but his effort was stopped. A few minutes later, Houghton doubled their lead on a headed shot off a cross to the back post. House made two more saves over the final 15 minutes of the half to keep the deficit at two.
In the second half, the Panthers kept the Highlanders from adding to their lead and were finally able to find the back of the net in the 69th minute of play. After a failed clearance, Cole Holland bounced a pass over the defense for Brady Hathaway. Hathaway turned around the defense and took a one-time shot with his right foot, firing into the far corner. The goal was Hathaway's first of the season. Whitaker Sackman replaced House in the Panther net in the 71st minute, and soon after entering, made a big save to his right to keep the deficit at one. Unfortunately, he was not able to keep the Highlanders from scoring completely as they restored their lead in the 79th minute, putting away a shot after a ball rebounded off the crossbar. 5 minutes later, Houghton pushed the lead to 3 with a shot to the bottom right corner.
Brady Hathaway opened his tally for the season with a 69th-minute goal. He was assisted by Cole Holland. Zander Parsons led the team with two shots, putting one on frame. Daniel Hartman, Alex Stockton, and Bailee Verdill all had shots in the loss. Chris House made 6 saves in 70 minutes of action, while allowing 2 goals. Whitaker Sackman made 1.
The Panthers fall to 1-2-1 on the season after the loss. They will open their home slate on Wednesday, when they host Keystone at Rathburn Family Field. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
