DuBois, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford volleyball team played its final non-conference tilt of the season on Tuesday night, taking on Penn State-DuBois on the road. The Panthers were highly efficient, hitting .337, in a 3-0 sweep of the Lions.
The Panthers opened with a 25-11 win in set one, hitting .522 to win the first. They followed that up with a 25-16 win in set two, and then closed the match by winning the third set 25-17.
The Panthers dropped 3 of the opening 4 points, but quickly took control of the match with a 5-0 run. Danielle Sasuga tallied a pair of aces to go along with kills by Jenna Louser and Lillian Bentley to open up a 6-3 lead. Ahead 11-8, Bentley put down another kill, which led to an 8-point Panther rally with Alycia Wilson at the service line. Bentley had three more kills in the run, while Wilson had a pair of aces. Louser closed the set with two late kills, putting the score at 25-11.
Pitt-Bradford maintained the momentum as the match moved into its second set, and after splitting the first four points, took another commanding lead with its second 8-point service run of the match. Sasuga added three more aces, while Louser put down a pair of kills. The Panthers continued to add to the lead throughout the set, eventually pushing the advantage to double figures with a Bentley kill and Wilson Ace. Penn State-DuBois made one final run at the Panthers, scoring 6 of 7 points, but two more Louser kills, along with one from Ruby Smith, ended set two 25-16.
In the third, the Panthers fell behind early, as the hosts used a pair of three-point rallies to go ahead 7-9. Pitt-Bradford tied the set with a Smith kill and ace by Brooke DeYoe, and then, after an exchange of side outs, posted their third 8-point rally of the match. With Marissa Bowman serving, Wilson started the run with back-to-back kills, while Bentley put down one, and Bowman tallied a kill and an ace. The Lions slowly cut into the lead and extended the match by 3 rallies while the Panthers were on match point, but one final kill from Louser brought the match to an end at 25-17.
Lillian Bentley led the attack with 12 kills and a .476 hit percentage. She also added an assist, 2 digs, and 3 total blocks. Jenna Louser was just behind her with 11 kills, while finishing with a .421 hit percentage. Alycia Wilson tallied 6 kills at a .417 hitting rate, while also adding 4 aces. Marissa Bowman directed the offense with 32 assists and also led the team with 10 digs. Libero Danielle Sasuga finished with 8 digs and led the Panthers with 6 aces.
The victory moves the Panthers to 14-6 overall. They will begin AMCC play on Saturday, when they host the defending AMCC Tournament Champions, Penn State-Altoona. Action will begin at 1:00 p.m. in KOA Arena.
