Five Panthers Earn Podium Spots as Team Finishes 5th

Williamsport, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team competed in the Rennie Rodarmel Allstate Invitational on Sunday in Williamsport. With only seven wrestlers competing due to injuries and illness, five of them were able to earn spots on the podium as the team finished 5th after totaling 74.5 points.

Cade Stern was Pitt-Bradford's best finisher, as he took 2nd place at 125. Following an opening-round bye, Stern won his first match with a 17-3 major decision and then earned a spot in the championship by winning a tight 8-7 decision. He fell in the final 12-2 to drop to second.

Mike Worsen and Gavin Thompson each earned a third-place finish.

Wrestling at 133, Mike Woesen won his first two matches by pin. He took down his opening opponent in 6:17, and his second in 2:10. After dropping the semifinal 5-3, Worsen won the third-place match 11-7.

Thompson moved to the 197 semifinal with a bye in the first and a pin (3:46) in the quarters, but dropped to the consolation half of the bracket after a 7-1 decision loss. In the placement round, he reversed the score, winning 7-1 to secure the third-place finish.

Raymond Worsen III picked up the most points for the Panthers, as he finished 5th at 157 with 15.5 team points. He pinned his opening opponent in 2:38 in his preliminary round, but then fell to the consolation bracket after falling by decision 8-6. He battled his way to a placement match after the loss, pinning two opponents around a win by decision. He began his comeback with a fall at 3:52, and then, after a 9-6 decision, won with another pin at 3:40. He was able to secure the 5th-place finish in the placement match with a medical forfeit.

Last but not least, Peyton Mitchell had his best finish of the season at 165. The freshman won his opener 9-0 to pick up a major decision victory, but dropped to the consolation bracket after being pinned at 6:23 in the quarterfinal. He came right back with a quick pin in 33 seconds, and then secured a spot on the podium with another major decision, winning 10-2. He closed the day with another pin, securing 5th place with a fall at 5:17.

Pitt-Bradford may have had another wrestler place, as Cameron Carter-Green pinned his opening opponent in 1:28 in the heavyweight bracket, but saw his day come to an early end after an injury in the quarterfinal.

The Panthers will return to dual meet action next weekend, as they will compete in 5 separate team matches at the University of Scranton Duals. The action begins at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday at Scranton's John Long Center.
