3 Panthers Place, Team Finishes 11th at W&J Invitational

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team was back on the mats this Saturday, competing in the Washington and Jefferson Invitational. The Panthers scored 54.5 team points to finish 11th overall, while 3 Panthers were able to earn podium positions.

149 was the best weight class for the Panthers as two team members reached the podium. Nik Fegert and Ray Worsen each earned podium spots and faced each other in the final placement match. Fegert came out on top with a pin at 3:35 to take 3rd place, while Worsen took 4th. To get there, Fegert won his first two matches of the day by decision, winning the opener 6-0 and the 2nd 4-1. He fell to the eventual class champion before taking on his teammate. Worsen also won his first two matches by decision, taking the first 8-3 and the second 2-0. He fell by pin in the semifinal. 

Gavin Thompson was the other Panther to place, taking 6th at 197. Thompson won his opening match 6-0, but then fell to the consolation bracket after a tough 5-3 loss. He battled back, picking up a pin at 1:07 and a forfeit to reach the 5th place match, but fell 15-1 to drop down to 6th.

While they were unable to place, several Panthers won multiple matches on the day. Cade Stern went 3-2 with a pin at 125, while Mike Worsen was 3-2 on the day with a technical fall victory, two pins, and a win by decision. At 184, DJ Slovick pinned two opponents, finishing the day 2-2.

Peyton Mitchell and Kenny Nickson III also picked up wins by pin at 165 and 285, respectively.

The Panthers will be back in action on Thursday, hosting Saint Vincent in a dual match.
