Panthers Drop Season Opener to Fredonia

Bradford, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's swimming team began its campaign on Saturday with a home meet against Fredonia. The Panthers lost the meet to the Blue Devils in a tight match-up, 82-70.

The Panthers started the day with a successful 200-yard medley relay. Smma Slocum, Lacey Rodgers, Madison Foote, and Avery Yard completed the race in 2:30.82.

Emma Slocum had a strong day in the distance events, winning both to bring her point total to 29 on the day. She won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 13:40.84, winning the race by more than 16 seconds. She finished the day with another victory in the 500-yard freestyle. She won the race with a time of 6:39.08, besting the field by 7 seconds.

Isabella Cercone secured two wins and a runner-up finish in her return to the competition pool. She won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.71 seconds to start the day, winning the sprint by 1.79 seconds. She also won her signature event, the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:17.05. She was 2nd in the multidisciplinary 200-yard Individual Medley, finishing with a time of 2:54.06, 7 seconds off the pace.

Madison Foote picked up the other win for the Panthers, taking first in the 100-yard backstroke. She won the race with a time of 1:19.01, finishing 3.9 seconds ahead of her competitors. She also took 2nd in the 200-yard freestyle, where she finished in 2:38.33.

Two other Panthers competed in freestyle events. Avery Yard was 6th in the 50 with a time of 35.21 seconds, and 3rd in the 100 with a time of 1:20.32. Lacey Rodgers swam the 50 in 33.47 to take 5th, and the 100 in 1:24.82 to finish 4th.

The Panthers will be back in the pool at the Duke Aquatic Center next Saturday, when they host Jamestown Community College in another dual meet. The action begins at 11:00 a.m.
