Bradford, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team brought its season to a close on Saturday with a matchup against Mount Aloysius. The Panthers scored late to cut the deficit to one, but could not find a game-tying goal in the final minutes and lost the match 2-1.
The Panthers started the game on the attack and nearly opened the scoring in the third minute of play. Ellie Yeager collected a pass on the left flank and slipped a cross to Tessa Duchi near the penalty spot. Duchi laid the ball off for Gianna Gomez, who took a one-time shot, but the Mount Aloysius goalkeeper blocked it with her left arm to keep the game scoreless. Once the chance passed, the teams spent the majority of the half exchanging possession in the midfield. Josie Orinko made four saves to keep the game scoreless, while Makartnee Mortimer took a shot that missed wide. The visitors were able to break through in the 42nd, beating the high line with a run from the midfield that led to a fast break goal.
After the break, the Mounties continued to attack and nearly doubled their advantage in the 52nd. Following an attack down the left flank, a Mount Aloysius attacker tried to chip a shot over Orinko, but her effort hit the crossbar. Another attacker got the rebound and shot toward the goal, but Orinko made a point-blank save to keep the deficit at one. Eight minutes later, the Panthers would not be so lucky. After a foul outside the box, the visitors were able to place a shot around the wall and into the corner to push their lead to two.
Orinko made two more saves to keep the deficit at two before the Panthers found some momentum in the offensive end. In the 72nd, the Panthers nearly opened the scoring. Riley Stowe took a free kick from 25 yards out and nearly scored, but her shot hit the crossbar and rebounded into the air. Yeager won the header on the rebound, but her shot missed the target. Ten minutes later, Pitt-Bradford finally found the net. After winning a corner kick, Tessa Duchi crossed in the free kick, where Yeager won another header. Her shot was able to beat the keeper and hit the side netting to cut the lead in half. The goal was the first of the freshman attacker's collegiate career. Over the final 8 minutes, the Panthers moved the ball into the final third a few times, but failed to get a shot away and lost the game 2-1.
Ellie Yeager scored her first career goal on 2 shots. Tessa Duchi assisted on the goal and also had a shot on goal. Gianna Gomez put a shot on target, while Makartnee Mortimer and Riley Stowe each had shots miss the goal. Josie Orinko made 7 saves in the loss.
The Panthers wrap up their season with a 1-11-1 record and a 0-7-1 mark in AMCC play. They will finish tied for 8th in the AMCC standings with Carlow.
