Panthers Dropped by Lions

Altoona, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford hit the road for an AMCC matchup with Penn State-Altoona on Saturday. The Panthers battled the Lions early, but allowed a pair of 2nd half goals and ultimately fell 2-0.

The contest got off to a slow start as the teams exchanged possession in the midfield until the hosts took the first shot after 9 minutes, which was stopped by Josie Orinko in the Panther goal. 4 minutes later, the Panthers logged their first shot, as Tessa Duchi released a shot from distance but saw her effort easily stopped in the Lions' goal.

Ellie Yeager had a chance to break open the scoring in the 22nd. Abigail Bateman sent a long ball over the defense to Yeager on the right flank. The freshman attacker beat the Lions to the ball and hit a quick shot, but only found the side netting on the near side for a goal kick. The Panthers had another opportunity to score in the 32nd minute after Gianna Gomez stole the ball in the attacking third. Her tackle sent a loose ball right to Duchi, who beat a defender on the dribble, but pulled her left-footed shot wide of the goal. Orinko made two late saves to keep the score tied at the break.

The Hosts came out of the break firing, forcing Orinko into two more saves in the first 10 mintues after the restart. In the 56th, Duchi opened up space in the box for another shot on the left side, but saw her effort stopped. After 5 quick shots in 2 minutes, the hosts finally broke through with a goal in the 59th. The Panthers' defense was beaten on an offside trap, giving the Lions a 3-on-1 breakaway. The Pitt-Bradford defense hustled back, but Orinko was finally beaten with a well-placed shot to the far post.

Five minutes later, the Panther deficit doubled. After the Panthers escaped a few chances on corner kicks via a block, a post, and a save, the Lions finally converted, heading home a corner to double the lead. The Panthers had 3 late shots, all from distance, but two were caught by the goalkeeper, and the third missed the target.

Tessa Duchi led the Panthers with 4 shots, putting 2 on goal. Gianna Gomes added 2 shots, with both of them on target. Ellie Yeager also tallied a shot. Josie Orinko made 9 saves in the Pitt-Bradford net.

The loss drops the Panthers to 1-8 overall with a 0-4 record in AMCC play. They will be back in action on Tuesday, October 14th, when they host Penn State-Behrend at 4:00 p.m.
