Shorthanded Panthers Fall to Bison

Shorthanded Panthers Fall to Bison

Bradford, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team hosted Bethany on Saturday afternoon at Rathburn Family Field. Despite leading at the break, the Panthers fell to the Bison in the 2nd half, losing 3-1.

The visitors maintained possession early and had two chances within 5  minutes. The Bison's first shot hit the far post, and then a second was saved by goaltender Madelyn Seeley. A few minutes later, the Panthers had their first chance. After a corner, Alexis Rohr sent a cross into the box that was knocked down by the Bethany keeper. It fell to Kallie Milliard, who collected the loose ball but was whistled offside. Bethany regained possession and continued to put pressure on the Pitt-Bradford goal. Seeley was huge in the Panther net, making 7 saves to keep the game scoreless.

With 10 minutes left in the half, Ellie Yeager attacked down the right flank and looked to put the Panthers' first shot on goal. She looked to beat the keeper to the near post, but her effort was stopped. After a Bethany free kick was cleared from the box by the Panther defense, Pitt-Bradford countered, and Tessa Duchi sent Mya King behind the defense. The Bison defender was able to catch up to King, but the sophomore attacker cut to the middle of the field and lofted a 20-yard shot over the keeper's head and into the net. The goal was King's 4th of the season, and sent Pitt-Bradford to the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

After five minutes of play in the second half, the Panthers found themselves down a player. A Bethany through ball was passed behind the defense, and a Bethany attacker and Pitt-Bradford goalkeeper Seeley raced to the ball. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the attacker beat Seeley to the ball and clipped it beyond her. Seeley made contact with the attacker and was called for a foul. She was deemed to have stopped a clear goal-scoring opportunity and given a red card.

Seeley was replaced by Josie Orinko, who had to make a diving save to her left minutes after entering the game. Despite playing down a player, the Panthers were able to carve out a few offensive chances. They worked the ball down the right flank, and King was able to find teammates near the edge of the 18, but the Panthers' shots went wide, not challenging the goal. Orinko made two more saves to keep Pitt-Bradford in front, but the pressure would prove to be too much. The Bison continued to find space behind the Pitt-Bradford defense, and struck 3 times in 5 minutes to go in front. The Panthers had one more chance to cut into the lead, but Lauren Donnelly's one-time shot curled away from the far post for a goal kick.

Mya King scored the lone goal for the Panthers, her 4th of the season. She tallied 3 shots with 2 on goal. Ellie Yeager finished with 2 shots on goal, while Gianna Gomez had 4, all off target. Madelyn Seeley made 8 saves in the first half for the Panthers without allowing a goal. Josie Orinko made 4 saves in 40 minutes of action.

The loss drops the Panthers to 1-3 on the season. They will be on the road next week, as they head to Ohio to take on Hiram on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
