Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team kicked off its season on Friday night, taking on SUNY Cobleskill. The Panthers used three goals from Mya King to pick up a 3-2 victory.
The Panthers controlled possession early in the game, putting 5 shots on target over the opening 20 minutes, but could not find the net. In the 40th minute, King got the Panthers off the mark. She controlled a long clearance from starting keeper Josie Orinko and then dribbled past the Fighting Tigers' defense. She sprinted away on the fast break and slid a shot into the far corner for her first of the year.
Pitt-Bradford took a 1-0 lead into the break, but was not able to add to it early in the second half. Cobleskill was able to grab some momentum when a free kick found the back of the net in the 58th minute. In the 72nd, King put the Panthers back in front. Lauren Donnelly sent a long pass behind the defensive line, putting King on the break again. The sophomore attacker beat the defense to the ball and fired into the far post for her second of the contest.
The Panthers lost the lead again 5 minutes later. They failed to clear a corner kick, and Cobleskill was able to fire a shot through traffic into the net to tie the game at two. The Panthers did not take long to regain control. Less than a minute later, Gianna Gomez hit the crossbar from 30 yards out. In the 80th minute, fullback Kaylee Leeper intercepted a pass, dribbled around a defender, and sent another through ball into the offensive third. King sprinted past the defense and, then one-on-one with the keeper, went to the near post for the game-winner.
Mya King finished with 6 shots, including 4 on goal. She scored 3 times. Lauren Donnelly had an assist while tallying two shots on goal. Kaylee Leeper also had an assist, while freshmen Ellie Yeager and Tessa Duchi all had multiple shots on goal. Josie Orinko (1-0) made 2 saves in her first career victory.
The Panthers start the season 1-0. They will be back in action on Thursday, September 4th, when they take on Penn State-Berks in Reading, PA. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
