Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford bowling team went 4-1 on the first day of action at the 2nd AMCC Round Robin of the season. This put them in 2nd place heading into the final day.
Bowling in their home alley, the Panthers got off to a hot start as they took down Pitt-Greensburg 871-661 in their opening match. Jordan Graham led the way with a 239 for the Panthers. Ekaterina Wilson had a strong match for the Panthers, posting a score of 170, while Sarah Newland rounded out the Panthers' top three with a 163.
The Panthers pulled off the upset of the day in their second match, as they defeated defending AMCC champions Medaille 822-773. Newland posted the high score for the Panthers, rolling a 181, while Garvey finished with a 172 and Grahm posted a 167.
Despite a small lull after the big win in match two, the Panthers were able to defeat New Jersey City 782-690 for their third win of the day. Garvey and Graham pulled the majority of the weight for the Panthers in this match, accounting for 191 and 183 pins each. Meghan Schwab battled back to add 159 pins.
Pitt-Bradford's only loss of the day came in close fashion against 1st place St. Vincent. The Panthers were caught in the final frame, falling 840-830 to the Bearcats. Sarah Newland set a career-high with a 213. Garvey also cracked the 200 mark with a 202.
Following the tough loss, the Panthers were able to battle back to earn an 807-775 win over LaRoche to close the day. Graham had the high score for the Panthers with a 188, while Garvey secured the win with 3 straight strikes in the 10th to finish with a 182. Schwab and Newland each posted a 161 in the win.
Jordyn Graham was the top bowler for the Panthers, as she averaged 187.6 pins per match on the day. Garvey had an average of 178.8 pins per match, while Newland posted a 170.6 average and Schwab had an average of 149.6. Wilson rounded out the scoring for the Panthers with an average of 135.8 on the day.
The Panthers will return to the lanes for three more matches tomorrow morning. They will begin the day with a bye, before taking on Penn State-Altoona, Mount Aloysius and Penn State Behrend to finish the event.
