Panthers Upended by Celtics

Pittsburgh, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team traveled to Pittsburgh on Saturday for an AMCC match against Carlow. The Panthers started slowly and were unable to recover, falling 72-43.

The Panthers started strong on the offensive end as Amber Murak kicked off the scoring with a layup, and a few possessions later, Ella Gettings added another after an offensive rebound. Unfortunately, they were not able to maintain the momentum, and the hosts took the lead with a three-pointer and then went on an 11-0 run. Murak made a short jumper to slow the rally; however, Carlow quickly added 5 more before Gettings hit a jump shot. The Celtics used another 8-point rally to extend their lead until Murak made a last-second jump shot to end the first period with the Panthers trailing 27-10.

Abagail Goss started the second quarter with a layup on its opening possession, but her basket was followed by a 3-minute scoring drought that ended with a Dalayla Alexander fastbreak layup with 5:52 on the clock. The sophomore guard was the focal point of the Panther offense for the rest of the half, as she scored the 7 remaining Pitt-Bradford points in the quarter. She made a layup and two free throws on back-to-back possessions, and then closed the half with a three-point play.

Both teams struggled on the offensive end after the restart, as each made just one field goal in the opening 4 minutes of the half. Murak made a jumper for the Panthers' basket, and then answered a steal by Alexander with another. Gettings added another jump shot, and a free throw, but the Panthers allowed 8 points down the stretch to send the game to the 4th with Pitt-Bradford behind 57-28.

In the 4th, the Panthers battled the Celtics to a 15-15 draw. All the Panther Points were scored by Alexander and Murak in the period. Alexander started the quarter with a jump shot and a layup. After Murak added another pull-up and a pair of free throws, Alexander stole the ball and raced to the basket for a fast break layup. She added another field goal before Murak closed the scoring for Pitt-Bradford with the Panthers' only three-pointer of the game.

Amber Murak led all scorers in the game with 18 points. She also had 5 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots. Dalayla Alexander was just behind her with 17 points. She grabbed 7 rebounds and totaled 9 steals. Ella Gettings grabbed 11 rebounds despite being limited to 18 minutes due to foul trouble. She added 6 points.

The Panthers fell to 0-14 on the season and 0-6 in AMCC play. They are scheduled to take on Penn State-Behrend in the midweek matchup in Erie.
