Fredonia, NY -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's and women's swimming team kicked off the Blue Devil Invite on Friday in Fredonia. The Panthers had 5 individual swimmers and 2 relays qualify for finals on the first day of competition. Through 10 events, the men's team is in 5th with 160 points, while the women are in 7th with 7.
The men's team had 4 individual swimmers participate in event finals, while also fielding three teams in the relays.
Three of the Panther swimmers qualified in the 500-yard freestyle. Conan Young swam in the top heat and finished third. He posted a time of 4:50.00 and finished 3.1 seconds behind the winner. Duncan Young swam in the second heat and finished 11th overall. He posted a time of 5:07.12 seconds. He was 4.38 seconds off the lead in his heat. Finally, Peyton Haight also qualified in the event and swam in the third heat. He finished 24th overall with a time of 5:31.02.
The only other individual event for the Panthers was the 200-yard individual medley. Eric Reynolds qualified and swam in the third heat. He finished 19th overall with a time of 2:12.08.
The Panthers had 2 teams swim in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The top team of Greg Tyler, Eric Reynolds, Conan Young, and Duncan Young finished 11th with a time of 1:37.60. The Panthers' second team of Peyton Haight, Camden Tetenov, Evan Whitmore, and Luke Kerr took 16th and finished in 2:03.26. The Panthers also had one team participate in the 400-yard medley relay. Duncan Young, Eric Reynolds, Conan Young, and Greg Tyler finished 12 with a time of 4:03.45.
Only one women's swimmer was able to qualify for the finals session. Carly Evers made the cut in the 50-yard freestyle. She swam in heat C, finishing 18th overall with a time of 27.47 seconds.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow for day two at the Blue Devil Invite. The events that will be in the next session are the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard backstroke. Preliminary rounds will begin at 10:00 a.m. with finals starting at 5:00 p.m.
