ERIE, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swim team got off to a strong start at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships Wednesday, finishing second in the 800-freestyle relay.
"It was only one race tonight but it was a great one," Head Coach Doug Alban said. "It was awesome for the guys to get second place. The freshmen had some major drops with Caleb dropping nearly eight seconds to go 1:45 and Chris breaking 2:00 for the first time ever. I'm excited for what's to come the rest of the weekend."
The Panthers' time beat its seed time by nearly 30 seconds.
Penn State-Behrend picked up the win in the 'A' competition with a time of 6:52.57, a new pool record.
The 800-free relay was the team's lone competition of the opening day, as the only other events on the schedule were 3-meter diving.
At the conclusion of day one of the four-day event, Pitt-Bradford holds third place with 26 points.
Penn State-Behrend is first (46) followed by Alfred State (34). Penn State-Altoona (22) and SUNY Delhi (20) trail the Panthers.
Action Thursday gets going at 10 a.m. with the prelims for the 500-freestyle, 200-IM and 50-freestyle, followed by the finals for those events as well as the 400-medley relay at 6 p.m.
