Swimming opens season with second place finish

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford swim team opened its 2014-15 season with a second place finish at its Panther Relays, hosted at the Paul C. Duke III Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

Penn State Behrend claimed the top spot by finishing with a team score of 242. The Panthers wrapped up the meet with a 150, while Penn State Altoona turned in a 132 to finish in third place.

The highlight of the match was the women's 800 free relay team breaking the school record by just under one second.

On the men's side, the Panthers came away with two first place finishes. In the 300 backstroke relay, Pitt-Bradford out-dueled the Lions of Penn State Behrend by clocking in at 2:50.74. The group consisted of Zack France, Tim Gilbride, Felipe Suntaxi and Corey Koss.

Later in the 800 free relay, the Panthers again finished ahead of Penn State Behrend to grab their second first place finish. This group, made up of Suntaxi, France, Alex Renwick and Koss, clocked in at 7:36.76.

For the women, Pitt-Bradford grabbed three top finishes. In the first event of the afternoon, the 300 butterfly relay, Pitt-Bradford's Wehonna Toth, Camille Follman, Elizabeth Prager and Ann Confer outraced Franciscan's top group for the win. The women touched the wall at 3:15.15, just 0.8 ahead of the Barons.

In the next relay, the 300 backstroke, the same group of swimmers came away with the second win for the Lady Panthers. The squad outswam Penn State Behrend for the win by finishing at the 3:11.02 mark, 14 seconds ahead of the Lions.

The same group also grabbed the final win of the day for Pitt-Bradford in the record-setting performance in the 800 free relay. The squad clocked in at 8:49.67, breaking the old record of 8:50.34.

The Panthers are back in the lanes on Friday, Oct. 24. Pitt-Bradford travels to face Cabrini College in a head-to-head meet in Radnor, Pa.
