University Heights, OH -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team wrapped up the fall portion of their season on Sunday with their second game at the John Carroll Classic. The Panthers faced Penn State-Harrisburg and lost 75-64.
Jeremy Rodriguez got the Panthers offense started, hitting a three on the games opening possession and then adding a layup on the next possession. Xander Norris added another three before the Lions made two straight layups to take their first lead. Tra Edwards hit a mid-range jumper to put Pitt-Bradford ahead 10-9, but his basket was followed by a 10-2 run by Penn State-Harrisburg. Coby Farley ended the run with a layup and Clarence Cobbins added a tip in; however a Lion timeout was followed by another run by Penn State-Harrisburg that saw the deficit grow from 3 points to 10 with 11 minutes remaining in the half.
Rodriguez and Maki Hill made short firled goals for the Panthers, but the Pitt-Bradford offense struggled to maintain a rhythym and the Lions advantage eventually grew to 19. In the final minutes, Edwards sank back to back threes and after a Lion free throw, Farley added another to send the game to the break with the Panthers trailing 43-32.
After the restart, the Panthers worked to cut into the lead, however their efforts were matched by the Lions. Farley and Kaleb Pryor each made a three-pointer and a layup in the first four minutes of the second half; however, the Panthers still 10 points. Following the timeout, the Panthers began their charge, limiting the Lions to a pair of free throws, while Cobbins made layups around a Farley three. The second Cobbins layup was converted into a three-point play with a free throw as the deficit was trimmed to 5 points with 12 minutes remaining. Penn State-Harrisburg slowed the run with a layup, but Niare Poplar made a layup and a dunk to cut the lead to 3.
Unfortunately, the Panther's run ended after the dunk, and the Lions scored 8 of the next 10 points to push the advantage back to 9. Cobbins tipped in another rebound to slow the Lion's rally, but the Panthers could not capitalize and build momentum as Penn State-Harrisburg continued their rally with another 9-0 run. In the final minute Pryor and Logan Joncas each made a three, however the deficit was too great to overcome.
Coby Farley led the Panthers with 13 points in the loss. He made 5-7 from the field and 3-4 from three, while also dishing out 3 assists. Tra Edwards was the only other Panther to finish in double-figures, scoring 11 points. Clarence Cobbins scored 9 points off the bench and grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.
The Panthers drop to 6-5 with the loss. They will return to action on January 7th, as they kick off the new year with an AMCC matchup at Mount Aloysius. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
