Scotty Gwyn was named the first head coach of the Pitt-Bradford men’s lacrosse team in 2023.
In their first competitive season, Gwyn led the Panthers to a 5-8 record. They finished 2nd in AMCC play, falling in overtime of the conference semifinal. He coached 4 players to All-Conference honors, including Ben Byers, who was voted AMCC Offensive Player of the Year.
Gwyn joined Pitt-Bradford from Concordia University Chicago, where he coached one player to All-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference honors while also overseeing a culture change within the program that led to over a grade point increase in team GPA.
A standout high school and club player out of Maryland, Gwyn played collegiately at Division II Wheeling (W.Va.) University. Gwyn was a four-year starter at the long-stick midfield position and served as a team captain for one season. Gwyn scored two goals with seven assists. He won 40.9% of his career face-offs and collected 186 ground balls. As a senior, he collected 88 ground balls, which is still the third-highest total in a season in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
Gwyn was twice named Wheeling’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year and also was recognized as an Academic All-American multiple times during his collegiate career.
After graduating from Wheeling, Gwyn pursued a master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh. While completing this degree, he was a team manager for the Panthers’ women’s basketball team and volunteered as an assistant coach at Shaler High School and his alma mater, Wheeling.
