Medaille snapped the Pitt-Bradford men's basketball team's three game-winning streak Wednesday, outlasting the Panthers 91-78.
The first half featured five lead changes as neither team could create separation, and both teams struggled shooting the ball initially; it was tied at 10 midway through the half.
With Pitt-Bradford leading 31-27, the Mavericks ripped off eight unanswered points, capped by an and-one play to build a five-point lead. A Panther three in the closing seconds of the half trimmed Medaille's advantage to 40-38 at the break.
Pitt-Bradford evened the score at 43 early in the second half on Manny Welch's three, but the Mavericks responded with another 8-0 run to go-ahead, keyed by a pair of triples. Medaille quickly pushed the advantage to double-digits on another triple, and Mike Hollenbeck's layup in traffic with 14:10 left made it 60-46 in favor of the visitors.
Pitt-Bradford slowly clawed back, sparked by its full-court pressure, to inch within four at 76-72 with 4:37 remaining. The Panthers forced a turnover on the ensuing Maverick possession, but missed the transition layup. After a pair of Jonathan Belton made free throws, Medaille connected for another three-pointer, and the AMCC leaders pulled away for good.
Pitt-Bradford shot just 36 percent from the floor and was 9-36 from long-range. The Mavericks hit 45 percent of their attempts, including 6-12 from three in the second half, and were 24-30 from the stripe.
Evan Greening led the Panthers with 22 points and 19 rebounds. He finished the night going 9-14 from the floor and pulling down nine offensive rebounds. Welch added 16 points, and Fateem Brockington and Jon Haenel had 13 points apiece. Brockington dished out five assists, and Hanel and Welch had four steals each.
Pitt-Bradford drops to 11-10 on the season and 9-6 in the AMCC. The Panthers travel to Penn State Behrend Saturday for an 8 p.m. contest.
